Woodham Ferrers & Bicknacre Parish lies to the south-east of Chelmsford and comprises two distinctive villages set within the attractive Essex countryside. Although each village has its own unique character and history, together they form a thriving rural community with a strong sense of identity.
Woodham Ferrers
Woodham Ferrers is a picturesque village situated between Bicknacre and South Woodham Ferrers. The village is home to St Mary’s Church, which dates back to Norman times and is recorded in the Domesday Book, together with St Mary’s C of E Primary School, which has served the village for many years.
Bicknacre
Bicknacre is renowned for the remains of Bicknacre Priory, a Scheduled Ancient Monument founded in the twelfth century. The surviving arch is one of the parish’s most recognisable landmarks and stands within Priory Fields, a valued open space cared for by the Friends of Priory Fields, a dedicated group of local volunteers.
The village is also home to Priory Primary School, which plays an important role in the local community.
